Despite my best efforts to steer my 6-year-old son towards adventure sports (rock climbing, kite surfing, skateboarding) the kid just LOVES baseball. Last week we watched the Billy Crystal directed 61*. It's an HBO Films movie about Roger Maris breaking the Babe Ruth homerun record, but it's really about the ways in which friends support each other and how the media can misrepresent those relationships. A great story.

With THE ENGLISH TEACHER, FX continues to cement itself as the home for the best scripted comedies on television. Thanks to pitch perfect writing, a dynamic ensemble, an anachronistic yet perfectly selected ‘80s soundtrack, and a lived-in sense of place that’s become a fixture of FX’s shows, the new series is deftly filling a PEN15/THE OTHER TWO sized hole in my heart.

A couple of weeks ago I started watching SHŌGUN on FX/Hulu, completely unaware that it had been nominated for so many Emmy awards! It’s definitely grim, but I recommend it. The cast performances are gripping, and if you're a sucker for impeccable production design and stunning cinematography, this show is definitely for you.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing director Cedric Hill’s award-winning short film, NOISY. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so I won’t go into too much detail, but it’s about two strangers who find connection on the NYC subway. This film was such a joy and brought me back to when I was an F train regular. It also reminded me that you don’t need a million dollars and an SFX team to create something that resonates. You just need to find that human connection – something we all need more of right now.

I highly recommend SLOW HORSES on Apple. It’s super well-written. Full of surprises. Great performances – especially Gary Oldman who is truly repulsive, and you can tell he is having the time of his life playing his character.

Oh, is it October? In my opinion the 2016 horror film THE WAILING is up there with THE OMEN, ROSEMARY’S BABY, THE EXORCIST, etc etc. So check it out... it’s streaming on Peacock, but it is worth buying, too. Email your favorite horror movie and I’ll let you know what I think!
