I love it when things get weird. Formulas, conventions, structures, so much of filmmaking tends to push creators towards conformity. So when I have the opportunity to play, I jump at it. Such is the story of Taste. My long time friend and collaborator Sam Littlefield introduced me to his creative partners, Lauren Kincheloe and Jessica James, who invited me into their circle. Their freedom, excitement and creativity were infectious and I feel like it carried over from the scripting phase straight through production. Together, we were able to build a unique world for their characters to inhabit. We were able to take risks with both the performances and the camera that other creative teams wouldn’t have been so eager to employ. And of course, the picture looks exquisite thanks to the work of my long time cinematographer, Miguel Drake-McLaughlin, and the digital finesse of my secret weapon, Matthew Semel. When you’re surrounded by talented people, it makes your job so much easier. I haven’t had this much fun making a movie in years and I hope that comes through as you watch.
